Shop Pat McGrath Labs Dark Star 006 V3:

Ok. It’s been a while since I got excited about a new makeup launch. Like a really long time. Including Pat McGrath Labs launches. I didn’t buy anything from the last Holiday collection. Or the Bridgerton collection. In fact, I think the only new color makeup product I’ve bought in the last 6 months was a new shade of the Laura Mercier Caviar Eyeshadow Stick (full review here) and the Natasha Denona Glam Face Palette (full YouTube video here). I almost even skipped looking further into this new beauty from PMG but then I saw the photos…. And let me tell you, I have to have it.

The new Pat McGrath Labs Dark Star 006 V3 is the latest edition to the original PMG Labs kits. It all started years ago with the Lust 004 glitter lip (full review here) and continued with the Dark Star 006 V1, V2, and now, the new V3.

What is the Pat McGrath Labs Dark Star 006 V3?

The PMG Dark Star 003 is $50 and contains a PermaGel Ultra Glide Eye Pencil in Xtreme Black, Mehron Mixing Liquid, Triochrome Eye Shadow in VR Sextragalactic, and Cyber Electric Eye Gloss. And holy cow, look at the range in that trichrome shadow! From purple to blue to green? Oh my! It was love at first sight.

Pat McGrath Labs Dark Star 006 V3 Swatches

If you’re not familiar with triochrome shadows, they’re eyeshadows that don’t just shift from one color to another (duochrome), but rather change from one color to another to a third! Pat McGrath Labs first debuted this formula in the Divine Rose II Mothership Palette (full review and YouTube video here) and I’ve been waiting (im)patiently for more. Of course PMG isn’t the only brand to have a triochrome formula. Natasha Denona did a triochrome palette too (full review here).

But please don’t be fooled by these swatches. I know they just look kind of an emerald black with a slight blue shift. But I promise the purple is there. Triochrome shadows react and shift to light. So if you photograph them straight on, you won’t see the third (or sometimes even the second) shade. However, in person, the color will shift every time you blink or turn your head. And it is simply striking.

How do I use the PMG Labs Dark Star 006 V3 triochrome eye shadow?

First of all, let me tell you that a triochrome eyeshadow is one of the easiest makeup looks to trick people into thinking you know what you’re doing with your makeup. You get a full amazing eye look in one product! So the easiest way to use the new Dark Star 006 V3 VR Sextragalactic eye shadow is to prime your eye, add a neutral transition shade to your crease, pat the eyeshadow all over your lid, and then blend the edges just a tiny bit so it’s not too harsh. Last but not least, add a dash of the PermaGel eyeliner and your favorite mascara (mine is PMG Dark Star). And that’s it. Simple. That triochrome shadow will do all of the hard work for you.

Want to turn it up a notch? Blend out the edges with a gray, black, green, purple, or blue to create a stunning smokey eye. Still not what you’re looking for? That’s what the Mehron Mixing Liquid comes in.

The Mehron Mixing Liquid is what really takes this kit up to the professional level. It is a clear liquid that can turn any eyeshadow or pigment into an intense opaque liner or liquid shadow. For an incredibly stunning triochrome eyeliner, just get a little bit of the Mehron on your angled liner brush, pick up a bit/mix a bit of the VR Sextragalactic eye shadow (I’d use the side instead of the middle), and then use it like a gel liner!

Last but not least, we have the Cyber Electric Eye Gloss. This is a clear gloss full of the teeniest tiniest most beautiful glitter. You can wear all over your lid by itself, or as an eyeshadow topper. Plus you could even use it as a super glittery highlight or body glitter.

Final Thoughts

Last but not least, one of my favorite things about the PMG kits is that they have the OG Pat McGrath Labs packaging that make them feel like lab samples. No crazy packaging or branding or labels. Just straight up high quality makeup artist level products.

Overall, I’m completely obsessed with this new eye kit and I can’t wait to play with it. Part of me is torn that it’s in an eye kit and not in a quad palette because I would love to see what Mother would put with it. However, part of me likes that it’s in an eye kit because it’s less expensive (although not by much). Of course PMG products are luxury and they come with a luxury price tag. But they also come with luxury quality. And in my opinion, I’ve yet to find a Pat McGrath Labs eye shadow that disappoints.

My only other thought is I’m completely shocked this is a spring launch and not a holiday launch. This triochrome shade will be absolutely stunning for holiday parties and for darker winter looks. Although I wear black 90% of the time, so it’s not like it would look out of place in the spring. It’s just a bit heavy compared to the pastels most brands are launching/promoting right now.

What do you think? Is the PMG Dark Star 006 V3 eye kit on your list? Let me know in the comments!

XOXO,
Tiffany
