Shop Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint:

It should come as no surprise, but I love innovation. As a researcher and trend forecaster, I love a creative idea, a new way of thinking. Or a company going where no one else has gone before. Sometimes these innovations are a hit. Others are a definite miss. Either way I give the companies props for trying something new. Today’s innovation came from an unexpected source. Ilia Beauty is known for clean yet classic makeup. I like to think of them as a grown up gal’s Glossier. Sleek products perfect for the “no makeup makeup” look but with a classy and sophisticated edge. So you can imagine my surprise when the most innovative product I’ve come across lately is the new Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40.

Although tinted moisturizers with SPF are nothing new, Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint is a serum that is a combination of tint, SPF, and skin loving benefits like Squalane, Niacinamide, and Hyaluronic Acid. It is also silicone and fragrance free. Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint is $46. It is available at both Sephora.com and Iliabeauty.com. The tinted serum is 1 fl oz (which is the same size as both my MAC and Charlotte Tilbury foundations), and comes in 18 shades. Although Sephora’s foundation shade finder is one of my favorite things, I actually found it easier to match my shade on the Ilia website. I am shade ST 7 Diaz and it’s a perfect match.

In fact, the color matched so well it was almost hard to apply! Usually I apply sunscreen liberally with my hands and then apply my makeup. However, with my makeup including my sunscreen, I was worried I would miss a spot and end up with patchy sunburn spots like the people who don’t blend in the spray on sunscreen. Although, I will say I love the addition of an SPF 40 over the usual SPF 10/15/20 in regular tinted moisturizers.

Along with the new Super Serum Skin Tint, I also used my Ilia Eyeliner and Ilia Mascara. In addition, I used my Ilia Color Haze Multi-Use Pigment in Before Today as both my blush and lip color. Ilia mascara is my favorite “no makeup makeup” mascara and their eyeliner pen is fantastic. I also prefer the Ilia Color Haze over the Glossier Cloud Paint. I think the pigmentation, smell, and taste are all better than the Glossier version.

Although I love the concept of the Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint, I do want to reiterate that it is both a “tint” and a “serum”. Read: it is very sheer coverage and stays very dewy. If you are a full coverage or matte finish kind of gal – this product is not for you. I’m usually both. However, I’m really into this serum for summer. I love the way you can get a little hint of tint, some skin care goodness, and your SPF all in one. But warning: you will be shiny/dewy.

The instructions say to set it with the Ilia Soft Finish Focusing Powder but I don’t have that. So I used just a light dusting of the Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder under my eyes and the Hourglass Ambient Lighting powder as a highlight. Although things might be different with the Ilia powder, I noticed a lot more fine lines and settling in the areas with the LM powder. So I would highly recommend only using this serum with cream or liquid products (blush, bronzer, highlight, etc. I’ll list my favorites in the carousel below.)

Overall, I think the Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint is perfect for the gal on the go, someone who wants the “no makeup makeup” look, the person who will only wear sunscreen if it’s already in their other products, or someone with limited room in their bag. I love the high SPF and the added skincare benefits. But most of all, I love that it’s the kind of product that helps us become healthier and better to our skin, while at the same time reminding us that we are all beautiful and don’t always need a full face of makeup.
