When I first started working in fashion, we always talked about how fashion has always evolved so slowly. Honestly, that scene in The Devil Wears Prada isn’t too far off base. Some people in a far away tower determine what fashion will trickle down into mainstream stores over the next few years. From color to style to detail to trends, everything is planned years in advance. Now don’t get me wrong. Not everything is a hit. There are some definite fashion misses too. But now that the Millennials are in charge, fashions are changing so much faster. We’ve jumped all the way back to the decade of our youth! We’re even seeing reboots of shows like Toy Story and Aladdin. However, since trends can easily go from good to bad, we need to talk about how to wear neon.

First and foremost, let me say (again) I don’t feel like I’m old enough for my childhood fashions to come back around. I mentioned some of these trends coming back in my posts on how to wear blue eyeshadow and how to wear metallic makeup, but I feel like it’s worth repeating. However, as I said then and will say again now, I’m ready to put my own spin on these “classics” and make them look better than ever.

Alright. So, back to the topic at hand – how to wear neon. Of course, one of my biggest words of wisdom here is to not mix your neons. In other words, you don’t want to look like a laser tag arcade or galactic bowling or an extra from one of the many current 80’s themed television shows. If you want to wear neon pink, or green, or orange, go for it! Just not all at once. Take a cue from the celebrities on this one – stick with one color at a time. If one piece of neon just isn’t enough for you today, wear multiple pieces in the same color!

If you’re not quite ready to fully commit to the trend but still want to wear neon, you can always mix one or two pieces with black, jeans, or some other basic neutral. Maybe it’s a bright neon sweater with a cute pair of jeans. Or how about a neon workout top with some yoga pants at the gym? You could even start with a neon headband or scrunchie. Oh goodness.. don’t even get me started on scrunchies…

Anyway… Aside from clothing, you can also wear neon in some more understated ways. For example, you could accessorize with a neon makeup bag or handbag, or even your socks. Of course, your makeup is an option too! There are so many ways to wear neon makeup. From lipgloss to eyeshadow to nail polish, there is something out there for you!

Here are some links to a few of my favorite ways to wear neon:

Of course, it should come as no surprise that most of these examples are neon pink. You shouldn’t have expected anything less!
