A friend of mine once said “If you were old enough to wear a trend the first time around, you’re too old to wear it the second time it comes around”. Now, there are a lot of times I agree with this statement. For example, I’m not sure I’m ready to embrace rolled socks or tie dye ever again. And I’m definitely starting to get PTSD seeing some of the late 90’s/early 2000’s styles in store windows. Not only do I feel like some of them should have stayed in the past, but I’m also in denial that I am old enough to see fashions “come back around”. However, I believe we are not only older, but we are wiser. Which means we can rock trends even better this time around. Here’s how to wear metallic makeup like the #bossbabe you are.

I have one rule if you are going to wear metallic makeup. Don’t talk about metallic makeup. Just kidding. The real rule is to not over-do it. You’re not trying to look like a cyborg. Pick one feature and stick with it.

Notably, as a previously admitted child of the 80’s and 90’s, there is one glaring trend missing from this list. Brown metallics. I just cannot do it. As a self respecting beauty lover, I can’t endorse this trend. Here’s where my thoughts earlier on “older and wiser” come into play. This trend wasn’t even flattering on the Spice Girls. So, let’s learn from our mistakes and do it better this time… Shall we?

Here are a few of my favorite ways to wear metallic makeup like a pro:

Eyes – Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Shadow ($29)

Eyeshadow is a super easy way to wear the metallic makeup trend. Gold and rose gold are still everywhere and both colors are super universal. Use a metallic shadow like this one from Laura Mercier in Magnetic Pink all over your lid, or just along your lashes as a liner. Of course the full look is pictured above. (I received the shade Magnetic Pink complimentary for testing, but purchased the other two shades pictured above.) Additionally, if you prefer regular eye shadow, Sephora Collection has some great metallic options. Unsurprisingly, I like the shade Diving In ($8) for my favorite blue eyeshadow look. If you go for an all over shadow, blend a neutral color into your crease for a day look, or spice it up with a darker tone for an evening out. Finally, swipe on a light pink or neutral lippie and you’re good to go.

Lips – Sephora Cream Lip Stain – Metallic Cherry – $14

Looking for something a bit bolder? Try a metallic lip using this cream lip stain from Sephora or this liquid lip from Smashbox. Coupled with a classic nude eye and sharp winged liner, you are sure to stand out. Although, you already know this look is one of my favorites. I’ll make any excuse for winged liner and red lips.

Nails – Smith & Cult nail polish – Sugarette – $18

Surprisingly, one of the simplest ways to wear metallic makeup is on your hands! Even my local nail salon has been showcasing some amazing chrome gel polishes lately. From chrome to rose gold to unicorn looks, metallic nail polish is a great way to show off your gilded personality.
