I’ve never been one for New Year’s resolutions. Unsurprisingly, the prospect of 365 days of committing to making a change (especially to ourselves) can be scary for a lot of people. In general, I feel like most resolutions are way too broad. If not just completely unattainable. Plus, goals are supposed to be specific and realistic. How realistic or specific are goals like “lose weight” or “eat better” or “be nicer” or “think more positively”? Maybe our goals should be to make better goals. However, what is something we CAN control? Breaking some bad beauty habits!

Throughout my life, I’ve learned we are all a product of circumstance. Even when it comes to our beauty routines. Some of us learned things like makeup and skincare from our parents. Others learned from sisters, friends, or even YouTube. One thing that is for sure – we are not all professional makeup artists and skincare experts with decades of training and strong self control. Because of that, it’s super easy to pick up some bad beauty habits along the way. We don’t clean our brushes once a week. We don’t brush our hair 100 times a day. Sometimes we even have that one beauty product we can’t bear to throw out, no matter how long we’ve had it. But, lucky for us, there are a few bad beauty habits that are easy to fix.

  1. Sleeping in your makeup. Believe it or not, I used to be so guilty of this particular struggle. Between waterproof mascara, smudge proof lipstick, white towels, and hating getting water in my face, taking my makeup off at night was always a chore. Enter: makeup wipes. Keep a package of makeup wipes by your bed and you never have an excuse to sleep in your makeup ever again. My current favorite makeup wipes are only $7.50 at Sephora. Seeing these little babies on my nightstand is enough to guilt me into taking my makeup off on even the laziest of evenings.

  2. Not wearing sunscreen. In addition to taking your makeup off at night, not wearing sunscreen is so hard on your skin. Surprisingly, you can even get sun damage on cloudy days, while driving, or even sitting at your computer! My all time favorite sunscreen is Supergoop Everyday Sunscreen. Not only does it have a SPF of 50, but it wears so well under makeup. No streaking, peeling, separating, or flashback. You can get a 2.4 oz (TSA friendly!) bottle from Nordstrom or Sephora for $19.

  3. Picking at your blemishes. Ok, ok. This is my #1 bad beauty habit. It’s just so hard to feel confident when your skin breaks out, and all you want to do is make the blemishes go away. But alas! Despite our instincts, we must be hands off. That’s where these Peace Out Acne Healing Dots come into play. Although I’m not a scientist and have no idea how these little guys actually work, I can say that they DO work and I love them. You just put a little spot onto your (clean – read: not on top of your makeup) blemish, and go to bed. In addition to being awesome and working overnight, sometimes you wake up and there’s a little white spot inside the material of the healing dot when you peel it off and it’s so grossly satisfying. You just have to try it for yourself. Or trust me. Whichever.

  4. Being afraid to try new things. While it’s great to have a “signature look”, you should never be afraid to try something new. Especially if you’re feeling like you’re in a style rut. Maybe it’s that red lip you never thought you could rock. Or an eyeshadow that always seemed just a bit too shimmery. Whatever it is, just try it! You are amazing and beautiful and I have confidence in you. Plus, this is the easiest of the bad beauty habits to break because it means you get to go shopping!

  5. Being too hard on yourself. Audrey Hepburn once said “Happy girls are the prettiest”. Ru Paul once said “If you can’t love yourself, how the hell you gonna love somebody else?” I’m not sure about you, but I think both had pretty solid advice. If you break any of the bad beauty habits on this list this year, make it this one. You are fantastic. You are enough. Every curve, every “flaw”, everything about you is you. Own it. You don’t need to be just like everyone else. Because if you were, the world would be missing out on the amazingness that is you. And we can’t let that happen, now can we?

Whether you’re the kind of person that makes resolutions or not, I hope the next year brings you health and happiness. I wish you nothing but the best!

XOXO,
Tiffany
