I read an article once that said everything that can be invented has already been invented. Of course, this doesn’t mean new things won’t come to fruition, but rather new inventions will be combinations of things that already exist. In fact, I’m a huge fan of combining two things to make an even better thing. Grilled cheese? Check. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups? Check. One of my current favorite combinations of things involves cosmetics. I love the idea of mixing two amazing products into something that ups your game even more. Case in point? Textured red lipstick.

You’re probably thinking “Isn’t textured lipstick going to feel weird?” Answer? Not really. The texture comes in the look, not the feel. But I’ll be honest… As long as the color is the right shade of red for me, I’ve never met a red lipstick I don’t like. My favorite textured red lipstick styles include matte, metallic, glitter, and gloss. Really, it’s just a way to take a “basic” red lip and turn up the volume a bit. Maybe you’re going to an event and have a simple dress. Or maybe it’s a conservative crowd and you can’t go too out of the box. Whatever the case, textured red lipstick is my new favorite trend.

Metallic Lip

Metallic lips are everywhere right now. Notably, metallics are a great baby step into the world of texture. It’s not too crazy but has a great unique flair. My favorite colors and formulas are Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain – Metallic Cherry – $14, and Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick – Man-eater $24. (Smashbox Maneater pictured above.)

Glitter Lip

As always, the most intense textured red lipstick involves glitter. Of course it will always have the best reactionary payoff. However, depending on the formula you choose, it can be extremely messy. For beginners, or those who are wearing this trend on date night, my favorite is Kat Von D – Everlasting Glimmer Veil – Dazzle – $22. Equally, if you are a bit more brave, or are a beauty guru, you absolutely cannot go wrong with Pat McGrath Lust: 004 – Vermillion Venom – $60. Pat McGrath is a legend and this lip kit is absolutely stunning in person. (Kat Von D Dazzle is pictured above.)

Matte Lip

Now, Matte Is one of the trickiest of the texture trend to apply. For me, it’s super important to have a “no smudge” formula. Of course, Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain – Always Red – $14 is and will always be one of my all time favorites. In addition to being the most amazing color, it stays all day and goes on so smoothly. Another great option for you traditional lipstick lovers is the OG MAC Cosmetics – Russian Red (Travel Size)- $10.

Gloss Lip

For all of you that are either fearless, or just gluttons for punishment, there’s always gloss. Whether you get a great red gloss, or throw a clear gloss like Sephora Collection Colorful Gloss Balm – Balm Diggity – $8 over the top of your favorite red, the slick glass look is fun and sexy. Plus, you could even use a clear glitter gloss like in the picture above.
